To tell you honestly, I think talent matters more. It is true that a degree could make someone credible, but I believe that talent matters more when it comes to the actual work. Talent equates to skill. And if you come to think of it, there are people who may not have a degree but still good (actually very good) at what they do.

Natural talent makes a better impression to the audience because they know how to imply a more in-depth application to the design by just going with what they think is suitable for the motif. Whereas, no offense to formal education that set rules are bound to the artists and they will sometimes stick to what techniques they learned instead of letting their design run free

Both are important but I do think talent matters more. In terms of art professions, it is more likely that a person will be hired/scouted based on the output they create rather than the degree they hold. Art professions especially focus more on finding an artist that has Outputs that match the visual idea of their company.

Critical Thinking: Formal education often emphasizes critical thinking and problem-solving skills, enabling designers to approach projects with a strategic mindset. They learn to analyze client needs, conduct research, and make informed design decisions.

Graphic designers need both formal education and natural talent. Talent and originality are as necessary as a degree in graphic design or a related discipline for creating great designs. Great graphic designers, regardless of schooling, can think critically, problem-solve, and adapt to changing trends and technology. Designers succeed via education, talent, and ongoing learning.
