• The current state of the graphic design and art industry in the Philippines

Posted by jerichoemmanuel on March 7, 2023 at 2:27 am

The graphic design and art industry in the Philippines has seen significant growth in recent years, with an increasing demand for creative professionals in various fields such as advertising, marketing, and digital media. However, despite this growth, there are still challenges that need to be addressed to further improve the industry’s state and opportunities.

One of the main challenges faced by the industry is the lack of formal education and training for aspiring graphic designers and artists. Although there are several schools and institutions offering design and art courses, not all of them provide comprehensive and up-to-date training that meets the demands of the industry.

Another challenge is the lack of recognition and appreciation for the value of design and art in the country. Many businesses and organizations still see design and art as an unnecessary expense rather than a valuable investment that can improve their brand image and ultimately drive revenue.

Despite these challenges, there are still opportunities for growth in the graphic design and art industry in the Philippines. With the rise of digital media and e-commerce, there is a growing demand for designers and artists who can create visually appealing and engaging content for online platforms. Additionally, with the country’s rich cultural heritage and diverse traditions, there is a wealth of inspiration for artists and designers to draw upon.

This being said, how can the Philippines’ graphic design and art industry better address the challenges it faces and leverage its unique cultural heritage to further grow and succeed in the global market?

I do agree! I think its main root is the impression that art is not a viable option for a stable career (especially now that AI art is available to everyone). As this is a very difficult thing to discuss and change, one of our best options right now is to promote art as a great career choice and the different paths one can take in the industry.

Thank you for sparking this discussion. As a Filipino Graphic Designer, I am proud to be part of an industry that’s constantly evolving. Recognizing and embracing our cultural heritages is key to setting ourselves apart in the global market. However, it’s important for us to address challenges such as access to resources and recognition on a larger scale. With perseverance, consistency, governments/institutions strong support and acknowledge for the Filipino Artists and a deep appreciation for our roots, I believe we can continue to grow and succeed on the global stage.
